Let's Get Ready For Kindergarten

The following are helpful guidelines presented by Neshaminy Elementary Guidance Counselors. They will help prepare children for Kindergarten.

Let's Begin By Mastering The Following:

	Say first and last name
	Say address
	Say telephone number
	Know age and birthday
	Count from 1 - 10
	Use bathroom alone
	Hang up coat on a hook
	Identify basic body parts including shoulders, elbows, wrist, waist, knees and ankles

Develop These Important Social Skills

	Follow a simple routine
	Take turns with others
	Be kind to other children
	Use "Please" and "Thank you" appropriately
	Listen to a story without disturbing others
	Raise hand to answer or ask a question
	Work independently on a simple project
	Demonstrate an adequate attention span for short activities and projects
	Express needs in complete sentences
	Follow a simple two part verbal direction
	Exhibits self control when told "No"

Basic Reading Skills: Work on these skills, to ensure that your child has a good start in school:

	Recognize and name basic colors including white, gray and pink
	Recognize name in print
	Identify letters in name
	Recognize the majority of capital and lowercase letters out of sequence
	Develop a correct pencil grip
	Write first name using upper and lowercase letters Example: David
	Recognize and name numbers from 1 - 10
	Count objects up to 10 accurately
	Identify basic shapes
	Copy basic shapes

Self Help/Motor Skills: Independent skills are very important. Please work with your child on these skills:

	Zipper jacket
	Buckle a belt
	Tie shoes
	Put boots on and off
	Eat with a fork and spoon
	Blow nose
	Assume responsibility for personal belongings
	Throw and catch a ball
	Use a child's scissors correctly
	Complete a basic coloring exercise
